A little everyday care helps sterling-silver jewellery keep its shine. If a piece is described as anti-tarnish, don't treat that as a promise that it can never discolour. Care depends on its finish, any plating and its stones. Follow the instructions supplied with your particular piece first.
Can you shower with sterling silver?
The simplest care habit is to take your silver jewellery off before showering, swimming or using a hot tub. Showering also exposes jewellery to soaps, shampoo and other products, so it is not just a question of water. Avoid assuming that an anti-tarnish finish makes a piece waterproof.
If your jewellery gets wet accidentally, gently blot it with a soft, clean cloth and let it dry completely before storing it. A splash is a reason to dry and check the piece, not to reach for a harsh cleaner.
Daily wear: sweat, perfume and lotions
Put jewellery on after perfume, lotions and other cosmetics have dried. Avoid spraying fragrance directly onto a ring or necklace. Take jewellery off before workouts, heavy household work or handling cleaning products.
In hot or humid weather, pay extra attention to moisture left against the jewellery. After wear, gently wipe away sweat and surface residue with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Don't pull at chains, scrub stone settings or repeatedly bend an adjustable ring.
How to clean sterling silver gently
Start with a soft, dry cloth. If that is not enough, check the product's care instructions before adding water or cleaner. Where those instructions allow it, use a little mild soap in lukewarm water and a soft cloth, remove soap residue carefully, then dry thoroughly. Don't soak jewellery with an unknown finish, glued details or stones unless the maker confirms it is safe.
Avoid toothpaste, abrasive powders, bleach and improvised chemical mixtures. Don't use silver dips, ultrasonic machines or steam cleaners unless a jeweller has confirmed they are suitable for the complete piece, including its finish and stones.
When should you use a silver polishing cloth?
A polishing cloth is not the same as an ordinary soft cloth: some contain cleaning compounds. Use one only when the care instructions confirm it is suitable for your jewellery. On an approved plain-silver surface, work gently with light pressure and follow the cloth manufacturer's directions.
For plated, coated or intentionally darkened jewellery, ask before using a treated polishing cloth. Polishing can alter a finish or wear it away. Avoid rubbing stones and delicate settings. If you aren't sure what finish your piece has, use a plain, soft cloth and seek advice rather than polishing harder.
Store it sealed, separate and completely dry
After wiping your jewellery, make sure it is fully dry before placing it in a clean, sealable jewellery pouch or airtight container. Store pieces separately so they don't rub against each other, and keep them away from bathroom humidity, direct heat and sunlight.
An anti-tarnish storage strip can be used according to its manufacturer's instructions, but it isn't a substitute for dry storage. Keep any moisture-absorbing packets out of reach of children and pets.
Care for your Hug Ring
Choosing something meaningful? Explore our Hug Ring collection. The Silver Hugging Hand Promise Ring with cubic zirconia stones has an adjustable open design and an electroplated finish, so gentle care matters. Avoid repeatedly opening and closing the band, and check with us before using a treated polishing cloth or silver cleaner on its finish.
When to seek professional care
Stop home cleaning if you notice a loose stone, a sharp or bent setting, cracks, flaking finish or persistent discolouration that a gentle wipe does not remove. A jeweller can assess whether the piece needs cleaning, a repair or attention to its plating. More forceful polishing is not always the right answer.

Your everyday silver-care routine
Cosmetics first, jewellery last. Remove it before showers, swimming, workouts and cleaning. Wipe gently after wear, let it dry completely and store it sealed and separate. These small habits support good care without relying on a “never tarnishes” promise.
